Case Study of Silver Ion loaded Seaweed Extract and cotton (prototype) gloves applied to Pompholyx eczema.
(brand name skintoskin®)
5th October 2011
The Candidate
The candidate for this study is an atopic 34 year old male presenting with Asthma, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalopathy, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Pompholyx Eczema. The candidate lives in a coastal region of the United Kingdom.
The main focus of this study is Pompholyx eczema, otherwise termed dyshidrotic eczematous dermatitis. This is a special vesicular type of dermatitis affecting the hands and feet. It can be acute and persistent characterised by many deep-seated, itchy, clear tiny blisters. There is weeping, scaling, fissures and thickening of the skin. The candidate’s Pompholyx eczema level can be described as very severe.
Current treatments; Dermovate ointment, Fucidin cream, Hydromol ointment. To fully understand this severity of this candidate’s atopic related conditions a brief reference point follows. Asthma first presented aged 4, currently under control with medication. CFS/Myalgic Encephalopathy presented in approximately 2001/2. Condition is moderate to severe. IBS. Presented with stomach infection in approximately 2007. Infection cleared, but IBS remains.
The application of skintoskin® gloves
The candidate was supplied with gloves from the skintoskin® range. The compilation of the gloves is 70% Cotton, 20% Seaweed Extract and 10% Silver ions. The application was made by replacing the candidate’s plain cotton gloves worn day and night with skintoskin gloves on a day to day ongoing basis.
The results
Over a 14 day period the candidate noticed a marked reduction in the frequency of infection. Minor relief from itching and severity of outbreaks. The seamless manufacture reduced the discomfort associated with normal cotton gloves An increase in comfort was apparent especially when fitting/removing over damaged skin. The design of the gloves kept them in place during normal day to day tasks and especially when the candidate slept. A noticeable reduction in the number and severity of wounds sticking to the gloves overnight. The candidate did remark on the snug fit of the gloves being a possible issue and there should be a revaluation on certain design areas. These comments have been noted.
In conclusion
This candidate’s very severe condition was afforded some relief by the application of skintoskin® gloves. This UK case study confirms findings made in previous studies performed in Portugal and Spain. The application of Silver, Seaweed and Cotton clothing has been shown to provide benefits for Eczema sufferers and those suffering other chronic skin conditions. The gloves have shown high tolerability, with quality of manufacture giving good durability. This study supports relevant scientific data supplied by The University Minho (Portugal). This study supports Invivo / Invitro studies conducted by the University Jena (Germany)
