Seaweed and silver may not strike you as obvious partners or bedfellows, but it is these two disparate ingredients which form the active heart of the SkintoSkin range of clothing for people with eczema and other sensitive and chronic skin conditions – newly launched into the UK market after two years’ availability on the continent.

The fabric from which the clothing ranges are made uses 70% cotton, 20% brown seaweed algae, and 10% silver compound – the end result is a so-called bio-functional textile, varieties of which look set to be the next ‘big thing’ in dermatology and medicine.

The extracts of algae, harvested from the North Sea, protect the skin against itching, while the inclusion of silver nitrate offers strong antiseptic properties, for instance reducing the growth of pathogenic bacteria such as staphylococcus aureus, known to be found in excess quantities on the skin of eczema sufferers, and which aggravate and compound their health problems.

The material has temperature-regulating and anti-odour properties and is designed to be extremely comfortable and soothing. The makers claim a reduction in symptoms of atopic dermatitis in approximately eight days’ continued use. Their antibacterial and anti-fungal activities of the textile remain active after over one hundred washes and beyond.

Because the material is anti-fungal, it can also help fight candida overgrowth (candidiasis) and the problems it can sometimes cause if levels get out of hand – for instance of ‘fold’ dermatitis in the body’s warm, ‘crease’ areas, such as the thigh / genital area, in between the buttocks
and under the breasts.

Ranges are available for babies, children, women and men, and include babygrows and baby bodysuits, as well as shirts, leggings, pyjamas and underwear for children,
women and men.
